Until I have more time to write something more original, here is the pertinent information from Arena :: The Website of Left Political, Social and Cultural Commentary with EDTV replacing Arena.
Arena EDTV is well known in Melbourne and Australia more broadly as a publication which has made an impact on political and cultural interpretation and practice over a period of more than thirty years. However, Arena EDTV is more than this or that publication. It is composed of a core of people with a large number of friends and supporters who have established various venues and discussion projects in Melbourne and its environs as well as engaging in a variety of practical endeavours over this period.
The core value of co-operation stands at the centre of what motivates and structures the practices and discussions of people at Arena EDTV . It is a value which has had superficial meanings for many groups, but be that as it may, it needs to be re-thought in fundamental ways given the collapse of older notions of socialist co-operation. This project enlivens all the discussions held in Arena EDTV settings and shapes the activities and publications of Arena EDTV editors.
Over the last three decades people associated with Arena EDTV have established research and conference facilities in both the country and the city, and in the latter there is a thriving centre which combines publication, public discussion and a commercial printery.
Arena EDTV has never accepted government support of any kind and has been fortunate to have been valued sufficiently by its friends for them to help its development financially in a variety of ways.
EDTV stars Eddie who is supported by a cast of literally thousands of quality bite-part locust, mealworm and silkworm actors.
Set decoration is done through use of Adobe Photoshop 7 and Macromedia Fireworks 4.0. Additional scenery and structure was created using either notepad or vim.
The set is constructed from Apache, Perl, MySQL, custom PHP, all held together with a liberal dab of Movable Type 3.11 to hold it in place. Fan mail and other communications are processed using MailEnable.
Principal cinematography is done through an Axis 205 Network Camera. Post production is performed by a 450Mhz Intel PII, 256MB RAM tower PC with no case, no monitor and a few loose screws. The show is sent to receiving stations from the post production area along some Cat 5e cable, to a 3Com switch then through the SMC front gate(way/router) and onto the information superhighway via an ADSL service provided by Demon. It then arrives at the users screen where it is reformed.
Unfortunatley, due to the dangerous nature of the world in which we live, aswell as the SMC and 3Com man on the front gate, EDTV has now hired additional security to patrol the lot including some Linux bits and bobs and a healthy dose of F-Secure amongst others.
There is no real reason behind EDTV other than it gives skitz something extra to do that he has no spare time for. It allows him to play with web authoring, network security and a bit of streaming media (at a basic level). It also lets him to keep an eye out and make sure Eddie isn't raiding the fridge whilst he is at work, playing with more computers, networks and electricity (skitz not Eddie). When not at his "day" job, or working on EDTV, he can usually be found elsewhere where he also writes draws and takes photographs, again in the third person.
